Happy Independence Day! On this day in 1961 and 1962, Tanganyika gained her independence and became a republic, respectively. And as we honor Mwalimu Julius Nyerere for being the father of our nation, we can’t let the day pass without honoring the woman who played an equally great role: Bibi Titi Mohamed, the mother of our nation.
Today, I share Bibi Titi’s story. I talk about her background, recognize her heroic efforts and their effects, and share the lessons she teaches us about the qualities of a leader. These lessons include courage, particularly in a male-dominated world; confidence; a progressive approach and vision; the ability to inspire; strategic capabilities; and hope in the face of adversity.
