Tenda Wema nenda zako. “Do good and be on your way.” This well-known Swahili saying is difficult to stomach; our natural tendency is to do good things with some level of expectation, and we rarely get the appreciation we feel we deserve. But in truth, somehow and in some way, we will always be rewarded.
Today, I talk about a man who embodied this saying: Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, first president of Tanzania and candidate for sainthood among Catholics. I explore his legacy, explaining why it lasts and breaking it into three parts: humility, developing people, and uniting people. I note that, despite his flaws, we can all agree that the sacrifices he made paid off and are greatly appreciated today.
“We speaking of engaging, relating. We speak of people. Let’s learn what we can do and do so today.”
