LizSpire Taylor – Leading Yourself to Lead Others (#17)

Elizabeth “Lizspire” Taylor is an Archbishop Tutu Fellow and a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants. She has enjoyed a multidisciplinary career, spending fifteen years in UK and Nigeria while being a hands-on coach, mentor, and speaker with a passion to help mid-career professionals set, live through, and accomplish their goals. She is a bibliophile, dog lover, and author many times over, as well as my colleague and friend.

Today, Elizabeth joins me to talk about true leadership. She shares the four steps to becoming a leader, and we discuss what it means to know yourself and what it means to be a leader. Elizabeth notes that time is meant to be invested, not spent, and explains why Elon Musk is a perfect example of this. She notes the importance of building good habits and the power of daily reflection. She explains that knowing yourself might appear different to different people, but at root, it’s the same for everyone. We discuss neuroplasticity and why strength lies in the unity of people with diverse skills. She notes the importance of holding yourself accountable, and we also discuss why we’re using social media badly and how to use it well. Finally, Elizabeth notes the importance of controlling your thoughts.

“The leader is not the one with the monopoly of strengths. The leader is the visionary. The leader is the director of strengths.”

– Elizabeth Taylor

“You need to understand that your life flows in the direction of your most dominant thoughts. What you think every day is what you will become.”

– Elizabeth Taylor
