Q&A – Introvert vs Extrovert: Who’s the Better Leader? (#28)

Do you have to be extroverted to be a good leader? You might think the answer is obviously affirmative, but the truth is not so simple. Extroverts and introverts have different strengths and weakness that play into their ability to be a leader.

Today, I talk about research on the subject and what it actually means to be extroverted or introverted. I explore the plusses and minuses of each type of leader, and I note that there’s no such thing as a pure extrovert or introvert. I talk about what it takes to be a great leader, and I share tips for introverted leaders, as well as a couple for employees of introverted leaders. Finally, I emphasize that the extrovert-introvert dynamic is a matter of collaboration, not competition.

“Extroverts are more likely to be attracted to and selected for leadership roles, but they are not better leaders than introverts.”
