Q&A: What Is My Role in Showing Empathy? (#19)

I recently received a question from a listener: “When is it my place to show empathy?” Especially during the pandemic, it can be hard to know how much to expect from your team and how much empathy you can share with them without sacrificing performance too much.

Today, I talk about why the empathetic approach is generally the right approach. I talk about why you should be willing to work around the people on your team, and I note the importance of recognizing that we’re all human. I talk about the communication breakdowns that can occur between emotional and rational listeners, and I talk about the importance of listening to understand. I also note the value of compromise.

“No one is equipped to endure too much pressure at once, and often you’ll only know what you are capable of in times of crisis when you are in it.”
